It seems like MMORPGs are getting more and more coverage lately. When certain things start accumulating millions of dollars a month, it’s hard to ignore them.

There is an important point the article makes however. World of Warcraft brings an enormous amount of people into the gaming market. But, is Blizzard pushing the gaming industry forward or cutting off progress? Many people who play World of Warcraft will ONLY play World of Warcraft. The same thing goes for most major MMORPGs. I don’t think the gaming industry has to worry. MMORPGs tend to have high turnover rates and the single player console industry seems to grow every year. I don’t think Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo would be creating another next generation console if they thought sales were diminishing.
I think Blizzard has a more direct impact with the online gaming world rather than the gaming world in general. Blizzard has the capability to catapult the MMORPG genre into overdrive. I’m waiting for them to take online gaming to the next level by creating a T.V. show based on WoW. Do you think this is crazy? Well, NCSoft already does that in Korea with Lineage 2.
There are a lot of gaming tournaments that allow you to “become famous” overseas. Now that World of Warcraft is so popular in the U.S., it’s only a matter of time before we see Tayman taking all the prizes at next years World of Warcraft killathon…. (lol)
